Interview: This is how the founder experienced the start of the music channel VIVA

Dieter Gorny founded Viva, the first German music station, 30 years ago. A quick conversation about ridicule, anarchy in the program, Stefan Raab – and the all too sad ending.

Interview: Sabine Hoffmann

Viva went on air on December 1, 1993 with the music video “Too cool for this world” by the Fantastischen Vier. What do you think of when you hear the song?

I remember the clock showing twelve o’clock sharp and Viva broadcasting from then on. Shortly afterwards I had to go to Hamburg for work and was fascinated when I turned on the TV in the hotel and Viva was still playing. I couldn’t believe it and immediately called the headquarters in Cologne. I had the feeling that I shouldn’t turn off the television, otherwise the program wouldn’t continue.
