During Saturday’s French Grand Prix, Jorge Martin once again proved that he is the master of Sprint races in MotoGP, winning his twelfth mini GP out of the twenty-four contested, thus widening his lead in the championship. For Francesco Bagnaia, on the other hand, the day was far from happy, marked by difficulties which followed a recent statement in which he expressed his antipathy for Sprint races.
His day started with a
second place on the grid, but quickly deteriorated with an accident at the end of qualifying which damaged his first bike, forcing him to fight an outbreak of fire and use his second Desmosedici. His performance culminated in a withdrawal, thus punctuating a series of setbacks which saw him fall in the rankings of the championship in third place.
The podium saw the remarkable rise of
Marc Marquez and of Maverick Vinalesthe latter rising to the third step after an initial start less effective than that of his teammate
Aleix Espargarowho received a double penalty for an early takeoff, finishing fifth.
Markstarting thirteenth after mediocre qualifying, made a dazzling comeback, placing fifth after just three corners and finishing the race in second place thanks to aggressive and risky driving that paid off.
Marco BezzecchiAfter a great startfound himself struggling to maintain his position before falling four laps from the finish, leaving the field open to Mark And
Vinales.
Enea Bastianiniafter a tenth place at the start, demonstrated a remarkable ability to come back, overtaking Bagnaia in the championship by a single point. With Martin at the top of the ranking and
Bagnaia slipping to third place,
29 points from the leader, the “long” race this Sunday at Le Mans promises to be an arena of revenge and redemption, particularly for
Bagnaia who will seek to rebuild after a series of incidents.
