In India, Google has failed in its attempt to legally prevent requirements for its Android smartphone operating system.

In India, Google has failed in its attempt to legally prevent requirements for its Android smartphone operating system. The country’s top court also declined to overturn a 13.37 billion rupee fine imposed on Google India in October, Indian legal portal Bar and Bench said on Thursday.

The Indian competition authority justified the fine by saying that Google had abused a dominant market position with Android. Google India is a subsidiary of the US Internet company Alphabet.

The Supreme Court instructed the court with jurisdiction to announce its decision in the case by the end of March. The competition authority had accused Google of having misused Android to strengthen its core business of online search. With the pre-installed Google apps, Android users would be encouraged to use Google search, it said. The antitrust authority instructed Google to make changes – including the ability to uninstall Google apps.
