International defender Gilberto Hernandez shot dead

Panama’s soccer team mourns one of its own. International defender Gilberto Hernandez was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in the town of Colon, on the country’s Caribbean coast, police said on Monday who arrested a suspect.

The 26-year-old footballer was riddled with bullets on Sunday by unidentified men who fired from a car, police said. Several other people were injured in this city where the settling of accounts between drug traffickers is frequent.

Called up twice in the national team

Gilberto Hernandez played for Club Atlético Independiente, with whom he had won two national championships. He was called up twice by Panama coach, Spanish-Danish Thomas Christiensen, notably against Argentina.

The police “apprehended an individual” suspected of being involved in the murder, said Deputy Commissioner Hermogenes Argüelles, head of the Colon region police, without further details.
