Intel factory in Magdeburg is tens of billions of euros more expensive

The chip manufacturer Intel wants more subsidies from the state and the federal government for the construction of its new chip factory in Magdeburg. As the Handelsblatt reports, the construction of the planned large-scale project will increase in price from 17 to 27 billion euros. Instead of the already promised grants of 6.8 billion euros, Intel now wants ten billion in subsidies. However, the government coalition in Berlin does not agree on this. While the Federal Ministry of Economics would be willing to spend even more money, Finance Minister Christian Lindner balked. He insists on compliance with the debt brake, and he is generally not a friend of subsidies. The start of construction in Magdeburg has since been postponed to early 2024. This could also be due to the fact that Intel in Magdeburg wants to use the latest machines from the Dutch manufacturer ASML.
