Insurance industry presents new regional classes

According to calculations by the GDV, the regional class will change for almost six million drivers. Liability insurance could therefore soon become more expensive for around 3.8 million owners.

According to the current calculations of the German Insurance Association (GDV), motor vehicle liability insurance could become more expensive for around 3.8 million drivers because their registration districts were classified in a worse regional class. At least 2.2 million motorists will benefit from this and will be in a better class, as the GDV announced today. For the majority of the insured, 36.4 million, nothing will change in the meantime.

Once a year, the GDV calculates the damage balance of drivers in the 412 registration districts in Germany and divides the districts into regional classes. The regional classes reflect the damage balance of the districts. The decisive factor here is not the place of the accident, but the place of residence of the vehicle owner. Although these regional statistics are non-binding for insurers, they can use them for new contracts with immediate effect and for existing contracts from the next insurance year.

Berlin is at the bottom

“Brandenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania achieve particularly good claims balances in motor vehicle liability insurance: Here, motorists cause less or less expensive damage than the national average,” says GDV General Manager Jörg Asmussen. As in previous years, Berlin has the worst loss balance in motor vehicle liability insurance. According to GDV calculations, the damage there is almost 40 percent above average.

This has consequences: “Berliners have to dig deep into their pockets for their car insurance,” the comparison portal Verivox told the AFP news agency. According to Verivox calculations, liability insurance for an average car owner in Berlin-Mitte costs almost 50 percent and thus around 105 euros more than in Münster, for example.

If comprehensive insurance is added, for which there is now also a new regional class classification, the additional amount in the Verivox model case increases to around 294 euros, a difference of 57 percent.

Does the regional class have an effect?

The damage balance is particularly bad in Munich, Hamburg and Essen, for example. In cities with more than 300,000 inhabitants, it is relatively cheap in Münster/Westphalia. The lowest damage balance is in the Elbe-Elster district in Brandenburg, which is 30 percent below the average, according to the GDV.

Basically, according to the GDV: The better the classification in the regional class, the cheaper it is on the insurance premium. “However, no statement can be made about the development of the entire motor vehicle insurance premium via a change in the regional class,” says the GDV announcement.
