Nele Hertling is an institution in Berlin – and a pioneer in many things. As director of the Hebbel Theater in 1989, she became the first female director in Berlin. But not only in West Berlin, which had been isolated for a long time, but throughout Germany, through her development and networking work as a dramaturg, curator and director, she helped guide the artistic development of the post-war decades and opened the eyes to the avant-garde – also the floodgates for the international. She founded it in 1988, when Berlin was Europe’s cultural city Festival dance in Augustwhich has conquered the most important place in the German dance world as an international festival for contemporary dance and performances.
