According to a new report from colleagues at Windows Central, Microsoft is working on a new method for Windows 11 to install critical security and other updates in the future without having to restart the system. Windows Hot Patching is already used on Xbox and Windows Server and could also come to desktop Windows with the big update to version 24H2. A first test is currently running in the Dev Channel.
The colleagues at Windows Central refer to a corresponding one documentation from Microsoft. Once the technology reaches users in the next version of Windows 11, a restart on Patch Tuesday should ideally only be required every few months; in between, the security updates will be delivered based on a security baseline without a restart. According to Windows Central, Windows Hot Patching will initially come to classic 64-bit systems; the ARM version is not planned until next year.
It is also unclear whether Windows Hot Patching will only come to the commercial editions or whether all Windows 11 users will benefit from it. We will certainly receive more information about this in the coming months.
