Chernobyl and Fukushima: Life in the Death Zone

Numerous animals and plants live again in the restricted areas around the destroyed nuclear power plants. Some animals have adapted to radioactive radiation – and a special fungus can even use it for itself.

A new study from New York University shows that certain roundworms are particularly resistant to radiation. These were collected at different locations within the restricted area around the exploded nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine. The region near the ruins of the reactor core is also known as the “death zone”. It is considered one of the most radioactive landscapes in the world.
