Injured in a car fire during the carnival parade in Kehl – SWR Aktuell

According to the fire department, seven people were injured, one of them seriously, when a moving van caught fire during the large carnival parade in Kehl (Ortenaukreis). The Offenburg police announced this to the German Press Agency on Sunday evening.

The seriously injured person had to be taken to a clinic in a rescue helicopter, as the city of Kehl announced on Sunday afternoon. According to police, the person’s life is not in danger. The parade float belonged to a carnival group from Glottertal (Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district). According to the police, the injured are members of the Glottertal fools group. According to police, no visitors were injured.

According to the city, the helicopter, which initially circled over the main street, was unable to land there and diverted to Sundheim airfield. The procession, which tens of thousands of people watched from the side of the road, was canceled.

The Kehler fire department was on site with 16 emergency services, the statement continues. The police have not yet been able to provide any information about the extent of the damage. The officers from the Kehl police station began the investigation.

Deflagration is probably the cause

The moving van caught fire when turning onto the main street near the Hotel Rebstock. To save themselves from the flames, several people who were on the trailer of the moving truck jumped onto the street. The fire broke out in the interior of the car, which represented a ship. According to the Offenburg Police Department, the cause of the fire was a deflagration in connection with a generator shortly after 3 p.m. It is currently unknown how many people were on the moving van at the time.

Resident Jan Fritzsche was on site when the fire broke out. “You heard a detonation and then suddenly it started burning here,” he told SWR. Then the fire brigade and rescue workers arrived quickly. Many participants wanted to save their cars. “But then the fire department said: Get out of here!”

The burned-out moving truck was removed shortly after 5 p.m. According to the Offenburg police, it was badly damaged.

City wants to prevent chaos

According to the city of Kehl, the parade began at 1:20 p.m. and 95 groups took part. In the so-called fool’s village on the market square and in the area in front of the town hall, music and the sale of drinks should continue until 6 p.m. The city said that this was agreed so that chaos would not break out.
