Two weeks ago the Ifo Institute in Munich sent a press release with the headline “Inflation is currently hitting the rich more than the poor”. Christoph Butterwegge, 70, was very angry about this. He is a retired political professor in Cologne and one of the most famous poverty researchers in Germany. “I find it perfidious and paradoxical when you declare rich people to be victims of inflation,” he says. In his view, it is exactly the other way around: poor, low and normal wage earners suffered particularly from the high prices.
