Infirmaries used to be plentiful in Bavaria. The oldest of the 220 leprosariums documented in the Free State, as the facilities are also called, dates from 1088 and, like most of them, was in Franconia, strictly speaking on Peterplatz in Würzburg. The houses bear your name because they housed the old and the sick, but primarily leprosy patients who were wasting there. Because the number of leprosy patients in Central Europe fell from the 14th century onwards, the infirmaries often found other uses later – or disappeared.
