India: from destitute colony to next superpower

The sleeping giant, China 2.0, the next superpower: the forecasts for India’s future could hardly be rosier. In fact, what has recently become the world’s most populous country is writing a true success story. How did that happen? A historical review.

April 14, 2023 was a historic day. According to an estimate by the UN, India cracked the mark of 1,425,775,850 inhabitants this Friday – which is more people in no other country in the world, not even in China, the long-standing record holder. A turning point, at least in terms of numbers, maybe also in terms of the consequences?

Because India’s real rise may have only just begun. By 2030, the country wants to take third place among the largest economies, overtaking Germany and Japan. This is anything but wishful thinking. In India everything goes fast, unhealthily fast, as some say. From the South Asian emerging country to a global superpower without hesitation, that’s the plan.
