India and Indonesia need each other. India is the largest importer of palm oil – Indonesia the largest producer. At the same time, Indonesia sources wheat flour from India. However, the manufacturers have now imposed export bans on both products, wheat and palm oil – and that’s where things get complicated. Not only for Indonesia with 280 million inhabitants, but also for India, where 1.3 billion people live. Many of them are poor and have become even poorer as a result of the pandemic.
