Index rents: vulnerable to inflation – Economy

The big bang is imminent in a few months, towards the end of the year. It will be the sound of millions of renters sitting on their pants in shock when hefty back payments for last year’s heating bills are due. But there will still be more unpleasant mail in some mailboxes: drastic rent increases for the growing number of those who have so-called index leases. They provide for regular price increases at the level of general inflation – and this is higher than it has been for decades. In May, for example, the inflation rate was just under the eight percent mark, with no end in sight.
