Incorrect bookings occurred after cash withdrawals from Commerzbank ATMs. Customers from other banks are affected. This is the second breakdown at the financial institution in just a few days.
Anyone who has withdrawn money from a Commerzbank ATM at the weekend as a customer of another bank should double check their account balance. There is a risk of an unpleasant surprise: the amount withdrawn may have been debited several times.
Number of those affected unclear
“At the weekend, due to a technical error by a service provider, there were some incorrect bookings in cash withdrawals by customers of third-party banks at our ATMs,” explained a company spokeswoman yesterday evening. Commerzbank customers are not affected.
The news portal “Business Insider” had previously reported on the incidents. Accordingly, customers from other banks who had withdrawn cash from Commerzbank ATMs had the amounts debited from their accounts several times.
These amounts should now be credited back, as the Commerzbank spokeswoman explained. “We apologize for any inconvenience caused.” The bank declined to comment on how many people were affected by the glitch.
Commerzbank customer accounts plundered
This doesn’t give the financial institution peace of mind – it’s the second breakdown at Commerzbank in just a few days. Just last week, fraudsters emptied the accounts of Commerzbank customers. The bank spoke of “a few individual cases”.
The “Finanz-Scene” portal first reported on the incident. Accordingly, more than 100 customers are affected. According to “Handelsblatt”, the criminals were able to steal a double-digit million sum with their scam. A Commerzbank spokeswoman emphasized that there would be no harm to customers. The bank will return the money.
The fraudsters exploited a security hole that has since been fixed. Girocards with the Maestro function were affected. Cards that can be used to make payments abroad are gradually being phased out. Since July 1st, no new cards with Maestro functions have been issued.
