For 56 years Sabine Estner lived in the body of a man, 14 years as a monk. From an early age she feels like a girl. The father tries to beat that out of her. Without faith, she says, she would no longer be alive.

The women’s raincoat fits like a glove. The buttons are closed high, the belt hugs the waist. Sabine Estner turns in front of the mirror in the department store. She looks her body up and down and looks into her own eyes. A well-groomed woman in her early 50s, her long, chestnut-brown hair falls heavily over her collar. She smiles. Sabine Estner puts the raincoat back and goes home. “I cried half the night because I felt loved by God for the first time.”
