In South Tyrol, SVP admits defeat – gains for right-wing parties

In Italy’s northernmost province of South Tyrol, the ruling SVP party achieved its worst result in history – two right-wing parties were able to make gains. But the SVP will probably continue to provide the state governor.

The ruling South Tyrolean People’s Party (SVP) has admitted defeat. They lost, said the head of the SVP, Philipp Achammer, after the parliamentary election. Forming a government in South Tyrol would now be difficult.

The SVP, which has ruled South Tyrol for 75 years, lost seven percentage points after all constituencies were counted and only got 34.5 percent. This means that the bourgeois-conservative party of the German language group remains by far the strongest force in South Tyrol, but achieved its worst result in history.

South Tyrolean freedom comes to almost eleven percent

Right-wing parties have gained. The strongest force in the Italian language group in South Tyrol is now the Brothers of Italy, the party of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. They came to around six percent. In the German language group, a right-wing party also grew the most: South Tyrolean Freedom has almost eleven percent, almost doubling its share of the vote compared to the previous election.

In addition to the SVP, the Greens also lost, as did the previous SVP coalition partner, the Lega. It is still unclear in which coalition constellation the current state governor Arno Kompatscher may be able to continue to govern despite the SVP’s historically poor performance.
