  • On the nineteenth day of the war in Ukraine, a new session of discussions by videoconference between Russia and Ukraine is to be held on Monday March 14, from 9:20 a.m. (Paris time). This time there is a glimmer of hope, after the failure of the first three sessions in Belarus, then of the meeting Thursday, in Turkey, between the Russian foreign ministers Sergei Lavrov and Ukrainian Dmytro Kuleba.
  • the New York Times alleged on Sunday, citing US officials who wished to remain anonymous, that Russia had asked China for economic and military assistance to wage the war and circumvent Western sanctions. • Emmanuel Macron spoke on Sunday with Volodymyr Zelensky. He informed the Ukrainian President of the details of the additional aid that the European Union decided to provide to Ukraine during the Versailles summit which was held on Thursday and Friday. The French president also exchanged with Joe Biden to agree to “strengthen the sanctions already taken against Russia, provide support to Ukraine and jointly take all useful initiatives to stop the fighting”according to the Elysee.
  • In the besieged city of Mariupol (south-eastern Uraine), where the situation is “almost hopeless” according to Doctors Without Borders, residents are hoping for the arrival of a humanitarian aid convoy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the convoy should arrive on Monday afternoon. The International Committee of the Red Cross has warned against “worst case scenario” while the town hall reports more than 2,100 dead.
  • Brent Renaud, a 50-year-old freelance American journalist, was shot dead on Sunday in Irpin, a northwestern suburb of Kyiv, where fighting has been raging for several days. He is the first foreign journalist to be killed since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24.
  • “About 1,300” Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since February 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday, as well as at least 596 civilians, according to the UN count on Sunday, which underlines that this toll is probably much lower than the reality.
  • In twenty-four hours, some 100,000 people joined the ranks of refugees who fled the fighting, bringing their number to nearly 2.7 million, according to a count released Sunday by the United Nations.
