In Bavaria, FFP2 masks are no longer compulsory on buses and trains – Bavaria

Despite the renewed increase in corona numbers, FFP2 masks are no longer compulsory in local public transport in Bavaria. Only a medical mask is mandatory. The new regulation went into effect at midnight. “The mask requirement in public transport remains in place because it is important as protection in view of the current infection rate,” explained Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU). But now everyone can “decide according to their own assessment and risk assessment whether to wear a surgical mask instead of an FFP2 mask”.

“We are relying more on the personal responsibility of the citizens,” said Holetschek. “In the hot summer months we are experiencing now and given the current pandemic conditions, we think this is proportionate.”

The cabinet had decided on the corresponding change in the Corona Ordinance on Tuesday. Holetschek said on this occasion: “The FFP2 mask has a higher protective effect. But it is also of decisive importance for protection that the mask is worn correctly at all times and has the right size and fit.”

Holetschek continued: “We continue to recommend using FFP2 masks wherever many people come together in a small space. But medical masks also offer protection if worn correctly at all times, and citizens are free to wear them as well use.”
