Illustrated book “Us and Them”: portraits of Helmut and June Newton

The camera was a constant companion in the lives of June and Helmut Newton. When they met in Australia in 1947, he was running a photography studio in Melbourne and she was working as an actress. Helmut Newton was looking for a model for photo shoots. June got in touch, got the job – and became his wife a year later. It was the beginning of a fascinating relationship that lasted until Helmut Newton’s death in 2004.

Under the pseudonym Alice Springs, June Newton, like her husband, pursued a career as a photographer from the 1970s onwards. Both photographed the biggest stars of their time. The illustrated book “us and them”, which has now been published in an expanded new edition, collects a number of these photographs. The book also shows numerous photos that Helmut and June Newton took of themselves over the decades – at work, in their apartment, on vacation. Sometimes they took photos of each other, sometimes the pictures were taken using a self-timer. It is the photographic diary of a couple that has had a lasting impact on the photography scene.
