Ifo Institute – self-employed more confident again – Economy

The mood among the self-employed in Germany brightened significantly at the turn of the year. The business climate index rose to minus 11.4 points in December, after minus 21.6 points in November, according to the Munich Ifo Institute. “The existential worries have decreased somewhat at a high level,” said Klaus Wohlrabe, head of the Ifo surveys. According to this, 16.7 percent of the self-employed still see their economic survival threatened, after 19.4 percent in November. In the economy as a whole, however, the proportion is significantly lower at 6.3 percent. The now quite strong increase in the barometer is due to significantly less pessimistic expectations. “But many self-employed people are still a bit away from optimism,” added the researchers at the Ifo Institute.
