“Ice Age Safari Allgäu” in Kempten: mammoths and vulture bone flutes – Bavaria

The “Ice Age Safari Allgäu” shows how people and animals lived in the Ice Age. It is the largest and most elaborate exhibition ever in Kempten.

The mammoth has long been extinct, but every child knows it. The problem is that many children and adults misrecognize the animal, basically as an elephant with long shaggy hair, just much bigger. However, this is wrong, and anyone who visits the stables in Kempten can easily recognize this from a detailed, life-size replica. The mammoth cow standing there is no bigger than an Indian elephant, but above all she has tiny ears. This was practical in the Ice Age; a large ear like that of today’s elephants would not be nearly as cold-resistant. The mammoth in Kempten also has very long eyelashes to protect against flies, as well as an anus flap – so that it doesn’t pull at the back.
