For professional cyclist Simon Geschke it is the last participation in the Giro in his career. Now he wants to say goodbye properly – and is speculating on a stage win.

Simon Geschke would like to say goodbye to his last season as a professional cyclist with a day’s victory at the Giro d’Italia.

“I definitely have a chance of winning a stage,” the professional cyclist told the German Press Agency before the start of the 107th edition of the race. “It remains to be seen how realistic a stage win is for me. I feel good, I’m at 100 percent. The team gave me the freedom to prepare for the Giro in peace.”

His French Cofidis team goes into the three-week tour of Italy, which ends in Rome on May 26th, without a clear captain. “Each of us can count on freedom. We will rely a lot on the breakaway groups. The Giro is always well suited for promising breakaway groups to emerge,” said Geschke, who expressed “great desire” for the Giro. In 2014 he finished second, narrowly failing to win the Giro day on the eleventh stage.

The Berlin native will only be active as a professional this year. “If I come out of the race well, I would like to do the Tour de France. But that’s up to the team to decide.” He would also like to be able to take part in the World Cycling Championships in Zurich in September.
