“I have not disappeared, I am not in danger”: Peng Shuai reportedly gives news to WTA

In a different context, the news might have been reassuring, but it only heightens concerns about Peng Shuai. Two weeks after posting on Weibo, the Chinese social network, accusations of sexual assault against the former prime minister of her country – a message quickly censored – the 35-year-old player has finally given sign of life in an email to WTA President Steve Simon. But communicated by CGTN Europe on Wednesday, a media affiliated with the Chinese state and therefore not independent, the information lends itself to caution and the content of the supposed email calls out at the very least.

“I have not verified or confirmed the recent article posted on the WTA site, and it was posted without my consent. The information it contains, including the allegations of sexual assault, is not true. I have not disappeared, nor am I in danger. I’m just resting at home and everything is fine. Thanks again for caring about me“, Peng Shuai would have written. Such a reversal, as total as it is insane, of a determined woman two weeks ago and aware of the risks she was taking, inevitably raises questions.

The disturbance and worry are only reinforced by the rest of the message whose tone – a nationalist ode to Chinese sport – contrasts with the personal case of Peng Shuai. “As a professional player, I thank you all for your camaraderie and consideration. I hope to promote Chinese tennis with all of you, if I have the chance in the future. I hope Chinese tennis will only get better. ” This is the surreal conclusion of this email. The concern has therefore not finished growing.

Steve Simon, president of the WTA, was quick to react. No fool, the leader did not hide the bottom of his thoughts. “The statements reported by Chinese state media only reinforce my concerns about the security and current whereabouts of Peng Shuai. I find it hard to believe that Peng Shuai wrote the email we received or believe in what is attributed to him. She has shown incredible courage in publicly laying a detailed charge of sexual assault against a former senior Chinese government official. The WTA and the rest of the world need independent proof that they are indeed safe“, he said.

“I have tried to contact her personally through several channels, without success. Peng Shuai should be allowed to speak freely, without pressure or any form of intimidation of any kind. His accusations must be respected, an investigation conducted with full transparency and without censorship. Women’s voices must be heard“, he added in a vibrant plea. Questioned on several occasions, the spokespersons of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said to ignore everything about this affair and refused to comment, arguing that it was not was not a diplomatic file.
