Have you ever thought about confessing to your best friend that it was unbearable to spend a weekend in his presence, but for fear of hurting him you retracted? TikTok gives you the opportunity to free yourself a little, under the cover of a challenge called: “I accept and my heart remains open”.
In front of the camera, Internet users quickly played the game of the 4 truths, thanks to this challenge which requires more transparency, in their relationship or between friends. As proof, the hashtags #I acceptAndMyHeartRemainsOpen or #I acceptEtMonCoeurEstToujoursOuvert have accumulated more than 350 million views on TikTok to date.
The rules of the challenge
The concept: tell the truth and nothing but the truth. A bit like in court in the end… Although the videos are, on the whole, produced with kindness, this does not prevent the tone of “settling scores”. Friends, relatives, couples, put their ego aside to hear, but also say, what they secretly blame themselves for, in a straightforward manner.
If the reactions and comments made are often amusing, there is however a more therapeutic approach behind this challenge: that of accepting the remarks of others (even if they are hard to take). Then take them into account.
Indeed, the first step is to “accept” the truth said, therefore to “recognize” in a certain way that we can behave in ways that do not please the person we are talking to.
And after hearing it, one should also not remain bitter or angry. This is the second step: “my heart remains open”. In this sense, this concept allows you to both learn to express yourself and communicate with others, but also to receive criticism in order to move forward, without complaining.
A reference that comes from a famous television series
Each TikTok “trend” has an origin. And going back a little, it seems that the “ref” of this sentence which has become viral comes from the American series My family firstbroadcast for a long time on the channels of the M6 group.
During one episode, we see the iconic Kyle couple telling each other some trashy truths. “There are times you are much too aggressive, masculine, I have the impression of going out with a friend from the regiment,” says Michael to his wife. To which his wife Janet responds: “I can accept it and my heart is always open. I don’t like your weasel look, you look like a psychopath.”
The exact line was essentially repeated by couples on TikTok, under the hashtag #JePeuxl’acceptEtMonCoeurResteOuvert, which alone has 27.6 million views. But the nuance: “I can accept it”, leaves the possibility of not taking the remarks into account. TikTokers changed the trend to “I accept”. Because the truth hurts, but your heart must remain open, that’s the game.
