Hubertus Heil: “The state cannot compensate for everything for everyone”

When the crisis comes, the hour of the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs will come. A conversation with Hubertus Heil about the big question: are we all getting poorer?

Mr. Heil, when was the last time you didn’t buy something because it was too expensive for you?
I regularly shop for my family, and I get annoyed when the butter costs more than three euros. But what is annoying for me is an extreme burden, especially for low-income earners. That’s where it really gets down to business.

“We will become poorer,” says Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck. “The Ukraine war is making us all poorer,” says Finance Minister Christian Lindner. Are your colleagues right?
I wonder who this “we” is supposed to be that’s always being talked about. Telling the people who have little that we are all getting poorer is not a political response I am content with.
