Hubert Caouissin appeals about compensation to be paid

A civil appeal, but not criminal. Hubert Caouissin, sentenced to 30 years of criminal imprisonment for the quadruple murder of his in-laws in 2017, appealed against the judgment fixing the compensation for the families of the victims, said his lawyer Me Patrick Larvor on Tuesday. “The client appeals because he finds that the compensation is too high,” he confirmed, without commenting further.

On the criminal front, Hubert Caouissin had not appealed against his sentence pronounced on July 7. “Brigitte’s family learns with dismay that Hubert Caouissin has appealed against the civil judgment which fixes the compensation for their damages”, responded Me Cécile de Oliveira, lawyer for the family of Brigitte Troadec. “The discreet and cruel extension of this procedure, chosen by Hubert Caouissin, is a sign of what the civil parties think of Hubert Caouissin and of his deep motivation: calculation and money,” she added.

The alteration of the discernment retained

Mr. Caouissin, 50, was sentenced for having killed with hind kicks in February 2017 his brother-in-law Pascal Troadec, his wife, Brigitte Troadec, and their children, Charlotte, 18 and Sébastien , 21 years old. He then dismembered, eviscerated and burned the bodies of his victims to whom he blamed the theft of a hypothetical treasure of gold bars.

The prosecution had requested life imprisonment with a 22-year safety sentence. At the end of two weeks of debates, the Loire-Atlantique Assize Court had retained the alteration of discernment, thus allowing him to benefit from a mitigation of sentence.
