Second division soccer team Hamburger SV secured an important victory in the fight for promotion to the Bundesliga at the start of the second half of the season. The “Rothosen” won 2-0 (2-0) at Schalke 04 on Saturday evening.

Immanuel Pherai and Laszlo Benes scored that evening for Hamburg, who moved up in the table to leaders FC St. Pauli, who won 2-0 against Kaiserslautern, and second-placed KSV Holstein lost against Braunschweig, opened up. A success that can be groundbreaking for the rest of the season.

Schalke fans show solidarity with Hamburgers

At the start of the game, however, it was all about the fans. The Schalke supporters showed their solidarity with the North Germans with a banner. The background: In advance, a planned choreography by the HSV fans with a block flag was prohibited by the police due to the possible use of pyrotechnics. The Schalke supporters, for their part, unrolled the banner in front of the curve: “Polizei GE – when will the light come on for you?” and set off pyrotechnics.

The Hamburg supporters were silent for the first twelve minutes of the game in protest against the DFL. The “Knappen” fans, on the other hand, have supported their team from the start. After their period of silence, the HSV fans brought tennis balls and chocolate coins onto the field and the game was briefly interrupted.

Pherai is unchallenged and accurate

Not much had happened on the pitch up until then anyway. HSV keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes had to parry a powerful shot from Tobias Mohr (4th) before the Hamburg defense slowly sorted itself out. The game then plodded along until Schalke invited the guests to take the lead. Ignace van der Brempt was able to deliver a cross that was worth seeing and head it in to Pherai, completely unchallenged, in the penalty area to make it 1-0 (22′). The Hamburg supporters who traveled with them celebrated the surprising goal with Bengalos.

Benes is also ice cold in front of the goal

The lead gave Hamburg security in their game; Schalke needed ten minutes to recover from the goal. Then Thomas Ouwejan took the free kick – and curled the ball onto the crossbar. Luckily for the North Germans in this situation, they then once again demonstrated their efficiency: Jean-Luc Dompé broke through on the wing and found Benes, who had moved in, in the middle, who increased the score to 2-0 (35′). Two shots, two goals – the ice-cold HSV went into the break with the deserved lead.

Schalke wants to, but can’t find the goal

After the break, the “Royal Blues” had noticeable traction towards the opponent’s goal, but HSV remained stable defensively and took away the momentum from the hosts’ offense. The guests’ switching game remained excellent in the second half, with the “Rothosen” wings in particular providing relief and dangerous situations in front of the opposing goal.

However, Hamburg’s lead wobbled three times: Ron Schallenberg had the connection in the 61st minute after a remarkable shot. Ouwejan also hit the aluminum again in the 75th minute, this time hitting the post. And shortly before the end, Schalke substitute Bryan Lasme was also unlucky – he also hit the post (90th+6).

Overall, the “Rothosen” played a confident game until the final whistle and gave their coach Tim Walter a groundbreaking away win in his 100th game on the sidelines for HSV.
