When it was announced at the end of March that a new director had been found for the British Museum, there was a noticeable sigh of relief in the London press. This meant that one of the biggest hurdles for restarting the museum had been overcome. Such a restart is urgently needed because the British Museum has been in a deep crisis since it emerged last year that an employee of the house had stolen and sold around 2,000 artifacts from the collection. The director, Hartwig Fischer, had to resign and the reputation of the house was permanently damaged.
