How Emmanuel Macron exploits the vein of commemorations

NARRATIVE – The Head of State marked, Tuesday in the Vercors, a new stage in a journey which borders on memorial frenzy.

In the contemplation of the place of Vassieux-en-Vercors, schoolchildren recite names. Those of the 73 inhabitants killed in 1944, when the German army destroyed this village in the massif which the resistance had made into a stronghold of the Resistance. A page in history that is both heroic and tragic, which Emmanuel Macron will then recall in his speech.

Because this ceremony, Tuesday, was the new episode of a real memorial soap opera carefully orchestrated by the Élysée. Emmanuel Macron had already paid abundant tribute to the Resistance, by bringing the communist Missak Manouchian and her comrades from the Red Poster into the Pantheon in February, or by visiting the Glières plateau at the beginning of April. The next stage of the journey will be the climax of this memorial year: the ceremonies for the 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord, in Brittany and Normandy.
