How does the Klaxit application work, which allows you to carpool for free?

The Klaxit application – Klaxit

  • The Montpellier metropolis is committed to offering carpooling trips between home and work, for people who have a job in the area.
  • This device is controlled by the Klaxit mobile application, which facilitates the connection between passengers and drivers, for short trips.
  • Passengers travel for free, thanks to the financial support of the metropolis. As for motorists, they are paid between 2 and 4 euros.

A new tool has been added to the “mobility shock”, promised by the metropolis of Montpellier (Hérault): the community
is committed to offering carpooling trips between home and work, for people who have a job in the metropolis. This device, tested since March 1, is controlled by the Klaxit mobile application, already adopted by more than thirty communities in France, which facilitates the connection between passengers and drivers, for short trips.

The user informs, in advance or at the last minute, his route and his schedules, and Klaxit is responsible for offering “drivers to pick up passengers without making a detour, and passengers to be picked up at the bottom of their homes, or almost. And if they walk a little, it’s not more than 5 minutes, ”says David Di Nardo, development director of Klaxit. The advantage of this tool is that passengers travel for free, thanks to the financial support of the metropolis. And if the trip is canceled, the insurance covers their return free of charge, by taxi, and without advance fees.

Paid drivers

As for motorists, they are paid between 2 and 4 euros, for each passenger transported, depending on the kilometers traveled. Or 160 euros per month, for a motorist who would carry two passengers, for 20 days, over 20 km. This income, which falls at the peak to meet the expenses of gasoline and maintenance of the vehicle, is also a compensation “to give up his freedom, to accept people in his car, continues David Di Nardo. It’s also a way that people see the value of carpooling, and really get started. Our fight is autosolism ”, the fact of being alone in the car.

According to the metropolis, of all trips made on the territory, those by car represent half, “including a little less than 1% by carpooling”. This device, which thus benefits from a “very significant growth potential”, points out the community, is also a way of offering a new way of getting around to the inhabitants of peri-urban and rural areas, less well served by transport. in common.

Campaigns will be carried out in large companies (the Saint-Jean clinic, the Montpellier University Hospital, the Oc Santé group, etc.), to publicize this device and “ensure that a person who uses the application finds routes easily, ”continues David Di Nardo. The experiment, financed by the metropolis, will last a year: it will then be up to companies, if they wish, to take the wheel.
