By Stefanie Stahl and Lukas Klaschinski

Lukas Klaschinski: When it comes to romantic relationships, it is clear that at some point, when an end is on the horizon, we must also find an end. We define and say clearly that it is now over. We don’t have such clear templates for the end of friendships. This is despite the fact that the bond between friends can be very strong – almost as strong as in romantic relationships. Some friendships just expire over time. This happens less often in romantic relationships. Things become even more complicated when this phase-out doesn’t happen, but the friendship no longer feels good. Then sometimes we have to draw a line in the sand.
