Housing, Olympic swimming pool and tramway… The Pirmil-Les Isles project will finally start

“An exceptional location in the heart of the metropolis and close to the Loire,” rejoices Pascal Pras, vice-president of Nantes Métropole. Announced to the public almost ten years ago, the major urban project Pirmil-Les Isles, between Nantes and Rezé, will finally come to fruition. The first constructions should begin in mid-2025 for delivery of the first five blocks in 2027, the metropolis reports. It is first on the Basse-île side, on the site of the current wasteland of the former slaughterhouses, where the cultural event took place Transferthat it will happen.

No less than 450 housing units for “all audiences” are expected for the first phase of this sector where buildings of 2 to 11 floors will be built, built with a large proportion of local and recycled materials. The small gardens and alleys will be at the heart of the neighborhood project, which will also accommodate offices and some businesses.

A school and a gymnasium are also planned in a second phase, while an Olympic-standard swimming pool (the only one in the department) will open its doors at the end of 2028 along Boulevard Schoelcher. Made up of a 50-meter pool, a 25-meter pool and a paddling pool, it will cost 52 million euros in Nantes metropolis.

The bicycle will be king, the tram and the busway as reinforcements

The other specificity of the sector is the reduced space for cars. The accommodation will not have any parking, either underground or above ground. All of the parking lots will be combined into a collective multi-storey car park with 650 spaces. All buildings will be designed to facilitate the use of bicycles. There will also be direct access to busway line 8 (end of 2025) and tram lines 6 and 7 (2027). The future district will, however, have the disadvantage of being located under the air corridor of Nantes-Atlantique airport and, therefore, exposed to noise pollution.

Ultimately, some 3,300 new housing units, or nearly 8,000 new residents, are planned across the entire Pirmil-Les-Isles urban project, two-thirds of which are on the Rezé side. The work will last approximately fifteen years. The first constructions were initially planned for 2019.
