Something new or just “Game of Thrones”?

The “Game of Thrones” spin-off “House of the Dragon” is due to appear next year. What can series fans expect?
With “House of the Dragon” the release of the first “Game of Thrones” spin-off is planned for 2022. The new series will take place around 200 years before the events of the fantasy saga. Since the original announcement, the question has arisen whether viewers will simply get to see more “Game of Thrones” -type material, or perhaps new approaches.
British director Miguel Sapochnik (47) co-showrunners alongside Ryan Condal on “House of the Dragon”. In an interview with the industry magazine “The Hollywood Reporter” he explainswhat series fans can expect.
“Game of Thrones” was “not broken”
“Game of Thrones” was “not broken,” says Sapochnik, “so we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel.” At the same time, “House of the Dragon” will have its “own tone” that will continue to develop over the course of the series. First of all, however, it is important to pay tribute to the original series, as it was “groundbreaking”. “So the most important thing for us is to respect this series as much as possible and try to complement it instead of reinventing it.”
Sapochnik think it is useful in this regard that he also worked on the original. He directed several episodes. At the same time, you shouldn’t say: “Well, when we made thrones, we did it that way …” If you start every sentence in production like this, you’ve already lost. “House of the Dragon” is “something else and should be something else”. After all, completely different people also worked on the series.
A worthy prequel?
The 47-year-old hopes that the audience will see it that way too. However, “House of the Dragon” must first earn itself to be seen as something else, because this “will not happen overnight.
