Holidays in the mountains of Slovenia: On the Velika Planina mountain pasture – trip

Cozy old wooden huts, traditional food and lots of cows: you can still have an authentic mountain holiday on Velika Planina, the largest alpine pasture in Slovenia.

On Friday evening, after their two sons have come up from the valley to help, Robert and Marjeta Zamljen drive to the “Strandbar”. Robert has a straw hat on his head, Marjeta wears garden crocs with holes, so the farmer couple gets into their four-wheel drive jeep with a trailer hitch. Past alpine huts and grazing cattle, the jeep rumbles north on a gravel road. About five minutes by car from the middle station of the chairlift that goes up to the Gradišče mountain, there is a wooden kiosk where two young women offer homemade juices, coffee and soft ice cream. Here Zamljen parks the jeep at the side of the road.
