15 years after the purchase of the Muna site by the municipalities of Hohenbrunn and Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn, the area once used by the military could soon serve as a recreation area. “From 2024 we could open the area under large conditions,” said Mayor Mindy Konwitschny (SPD) at the citizens’ meeting for Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn. As early as next year, they want to offer monthly events on the Muna site together with the neighboring community of Hohenbrunn. Fairy tale tours and herbal hikes are planned. A first event will take place on Saturday, December 3rd. Then, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., herbal teacher Barbara Pfäffle-Eitel invites you to take a walk in the forest – under the motto “Discover the diversity of trees”. Participation costs ten euros per person; We ask that you register on the website of the municipality of Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn.

The site of the Hohenbrunn Army Ammunition Plant, or Muna for short, covers an area of 180 hectares on the territory of two municipalities. From 1938 the Nazis built a munitions factory, countless bunkers and other buildings there. At times, 4,000 people were employed on the plant, mostly forced labourers. After the war, the US Army and later the Bundeswehr used the site before the communities of Hohenbrunn and Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn acquired it in 2007. Today, only part of the area is a commercial area, entry is prohibited on the remaining areas, mainly due to the danger posed by the old buildings and bunkers.

Meanwhile, nature is gradually reclaiming the cordoned-off area. According to a report by the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry: “The bunkers are overgrown and surrounded by trees, bushes and other plants. The grass is high, dry biotopes have formed in the old track beds and the forest could grow without forest management Develop usage. In a way, everything feels like it’s in a deep slumber.”
