In the qualification for the last competition in Bischofshofen, Kobayashi underlined his top form. He clearly distanced Wellinger and goes into the competition as the big favorite. Wellinger himself sees it that way: “He’s the clear favorite, he’s proven that,” said the German. “I planned this day differently. That was a bit wooden.”

Despite the mixed qualifications, the 28-year-old is confident. He is “extremely optimistic that I will jump well,” said Wellinger, who is also looking forward to many special fans from home. His mother, who is involved in organizing the Biathlon World Cup, which will take place in Ruhpolding next week, should make it to the Paul-Außerleitner-Schanze in time.

Kobayashi is 4.8 points ahead of the German in the overall ranking. The points and distances from the qualification do not count towards the overall ranking. “It’s a small, clear setback that you have to accept,” said Sven Hannawald on ARD.

Behind Kobayashi and Wellinger, Jan Hörl and Stefan Kraft are also in the draw for the overall victory before the final on Saturday. However, the two Austrians are already well behind the leading duo and therefore only have outsider chances. (smr)
