Hertha President Bernstein, who died suddenly, came from the fan scene. Before the game against Düsseldorf, thousands of supporters show their condolences.

In silent memory of the club president who died suddenly Kay Bernstein, thousands of Hertha BSC fans marched to the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

“In deep sadness for Kay” was written in white letters on a black banner at the head of the procession that was moving from Theodor-Heuss-Platz to Berlin’s first home game after the news in the Olympic Stadium against Fortuna Düsseldorf (1.30 p.m./RTL and Sky). opened. The Berlin police spoke of a provisional number of 7,000 participants. After a good half hour the funeral march reached the Olympic Square.

The fans were dressed in black or wore the second division football team’s blue training jacket, which was Bernstein’s trademark. The president, who used to stand in the Ostkurve as an ultra and lead singer, died on Tuesday at the age of 43. Fans of other Berlin football clubs also paid him the honor.

Great sympathy

Bernstein’s death caused great sympathy across the country. At Karlsruher SC, which has had a fan friendship with Hertha for decades, there was a large banner and choreography for Bernstein on Friday. At the Schalke 04 game against Hamburger SV, the club boss was applauded. The active fan scene in many other stadiums also remembered him.

Hertha prepared their fans for a special matchday with an email on Sunday morning. “Support each other and be empathetic, because coping with grief is individual,” it said.
