Hendrik Wüst: Laschet’s legacy – opinion

Hendrik Wüst, ambitious lawyer and Minister of Transport for North Rhine-Westphalia, is to inherit Armin Laschet in Düsseldorf. His political career seemed to be over by 2010.

Most recently, Hendrik Wüst ran over raw eggs: carefully, deliberately, quietly. Everyone in North Rhine-Westphalia’s CDU knew that their transport minister wanted to get to the top, that he was aiming for Armin Laschet’s sole political legacy. But the ambitious Münsterländer was smart enough not to make any claims of his own. Not even after his employer, the previous prime minister and party leader, had disastrously lost the federal election. In the CDU crisis meetings, Wüst had others advertise himself and a “generation change” in the country. That is why even skeptical party friends now admit: “Hendrik has matured, maybe he has grown up.”
