The release of Helldivers 2 seemed to be a bit lost next to Sony’s PS5 blockbusters. But as Steam proves, not even Palworld can keep up with the hype.
San Mateo – Helldivers, Super Earth and the fight for freedom are only known to very few people in the gaming scene. Since the first part of the franchise, only a small community has formed around the title. This seems to be growing significantly with Helldivers 2. The shooter pushed Palworld, the hype game par excellence, from the top spot in the Steam charts even before its release. But multiplayer is apparently becoming a real bestseller on PlayStation too.

How big is the hype? At the beginning of the year, Palworld, probably the biggest surprise so far in 2024, hit Steam. Since then, the Pokémon offshoot has dominated the ranks of the best-selling games on the PC platform. But what even fewer would have expected: after just a few weeks, the chart crown has now been passed on to Helldivers 2.
At least in the USA, where the respectable success was achieved solely through pre-orders. In Germany, the developers at Arrowhead Game Studios still have to be patient for such a big wave of hype. Palworld still sends greetings from the Steam leadership. In terms of player numbers, there is still a long way to go before the two titles are on equal terms. While the survival hit has around 764,000 simultaneous players, Helldivers 2 starts with 63,000 users.
What is Helldivers 2? In the new online shooter you are a soldier of the so-called “Over-Earth”, which wants to free the entire universe from monsters and enemy civilizations. To do this, you are always sent to all sorts of planets with three other players to really clean up there. In principle, you do nothing more or less than level monsters, robots and giant insects. Not only do you have big guns up your sleeve, but you can also call in explosive help in the form of atomic bombs during your mission.

The release of Helldivers 2 will show how much of the anticipation remains in the end. With Foamstars, another live service shooter recently found its way to the PS5. However, this was not yet convincing within the PlayStation community. Many people lack the necessary speed in the new free game from PS Plus. At least there seems to be a certain level of fall for Helldivers 2. According to the renowned leaker “Kami”, the game is said to be the most pre-ordered game in the PS Store in both the United States and other regions.
