At some point it won’t work anymore. Helgard Haug’s father, who suffers from dementia, has to move to a nursing home. After an initial settling-in phase, he blossoms: “Has found his role: as head of the facility. Makes big speeches. Looks at everything with an alert eye,” writes Haug: “This has become a matter for the boss. A brilliant move by his brain.” As his personality disintegrates and disappears, his brain rebels, he rhymes with a world he can bear: one in which he will not lose his sovereignty. This also includes the fact that he involuntarily tries to recall more memories than are actually there.
