Hard blow for Trump, strikes on kyiv and crisis between London and Caracas

Did you miss the news this morning? We have put together a summary to help you see things more clearly.

The race to the White House is turning into an obstacle course for Donald Trump. The US state of Maine announced Thursday that it would not appear on the ballots in the Republican primary for the 2024 presidential election, a week after a similar decision in Colorado, in connection with the assault on the Capitol in 2021 .

“He is not fit for the office of president” under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which excludes from any public responsibility people who have engaged in acts of “insurrection”, declared in an official document the Democratic Secretary of the State of Maine Shenna Bellows, responsible for organizing the elections. This decision will be challenged in court by the former president and could be the subject of a final appeal before the Supreme Court of the United States.

At the end of the year, the Kremlin is not releasing pressure on Ukraine, quite the contrary. Russia thus launched this Friday morning a vast series of strikes on several cities in its neighbor, targeting in particular the capital Kiev as well as the towns of Kharkiv (north-east), Liv (west) and Odessa (south).

A nationwide air alert was activated around 5 a.m. The attacks come after Russia confirmed on Tuesday that one of its ships had been damaged in an attack on kyiv in annexed Crimea.

Tension has just risen a notch between London and Caracas. The President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro launched military exercises on the border of Guyana on Thursday, in the midst of the crisis on the Essequibo, “in response to the provocation” of the United Kingdom which sent a warship to the region, the Guyanese authorities, for their part, denying any “offensive” inclination.

This first phase of exercises brings together 5,682 soldiers and F-16 (American) and Sukhoi (Russian) fighter planes. Just before Christmas, the United Kingdom announced the deployment of a military patrol ship in support of Guyana on the Essequibo, an oil-rich territory claimed by Venezuela.
