The end of the soap opera is no longer a secret, and it now appears imminent. Hansi Flick, who will leave Bayern Munich at the end of this season, will take the German team well in hand. The technician acknowledged this Friday that there were only a few details to settle before the officialization of his recruitment to replace Joachim Löw after the Euro.

“I have spoken with the DFB (the German Federation) and everyone knows how much I care about the national team,” he told reporters, “but there are always things to be settled, now it s ‘all about details’. On Tuesday, DFB director Oliver Bierhoff had confirmed that the discussions were very advanced: “I do not think the decision will fall in the next few days, but I would like everything to be settled before the Euro” (June 11-11 July), he had said.

When everything is ready, “we can quickly announce it,” said Flick, who is leading his last game as Bayern coach on Saturday against Augsburg. At the start of the week, the Munich daily Abendzeitung had announced – without eliciting any denial – that Flick, 56, would sign a three-year contract to lead the German selection after Euro this summer, allowing him to aim for Euro 2024 at home. Löw, in office since 2006, has announced that the continental competition will be his last tournament.
