Hans Ranke from DHDL wants to be a healthy, quick meal in just three minutes. But will the vegan ready meal convince a lazy cook and passionate frozen food connoisseur?

What am I eating today? That’s a question that plagues me every day – almost as much as the answer. This is usually frozen fricassee, pizza or bamigoreng. Yes, it’s not balanced, but what can you do? Cooking eats up way too much time and is more like gambling with my skills. It has to be done quickly if you need something between the gills between the end of the day and a visit to the alibi gym. And so, all too often, my chef de cuisine is Dr. Oetker and not myself.

Torsten Schuh apparently had a similar problem. That’s why he founded Hans Ranke and pitched his ready meal idea in The Lion’s Den. The highlight: Torsten makes couscous from lentils and chickpeas. Not stupid at all, because legumes contain a lot of protein and fiber. The vision behind Hans Ranke: conjure up healthy and delicious food in just three minutes. The principle is similar to the popular five-minute terrine. Simply pour hot water over it, stir, wait three minutes and the dish is ready. Perfect for anti-chefs like me.

Hans Ranke from DHDL: The nutritional values

But before the taste test begins, let’s take a look at what’s in the bowls of the infusion dish. There are currently three flavors from Hans Ranke: mango curry, Porcini Chili and Mediterranean á 100 grams per pack for about 4.80 euros the dish. All are vegan, prepared in three minutes and, according to the manufacturer, are made from 100 percent organically grown ingredients.

All flavors are based on red lentil and chickpea couscous. Nice: Preservatives or other unnatural ingredients are missing from the list of ingredients and the dishes are still according to the best before date until October 2023 durable. On top of that, the tray is compostable and the plastic wrap is recyclable. More is not possible.

interim conclusion

Compared to 100 grams of Frosta brand chicken fricassee, Hans Ranke delivers twice the calorific value. Nevertheless, the stated nutritional values are convincing because the couscous is made from lentils and chickpeas. This ensures a high protein and fiber content. And that’s exactly where Hans Ranke is miles superior to the Frosta dish. Even the significantly higher calorie content does not bother if Hans Ranke fills you up for a long time – more on that later. A Frosta pack contains around 450 grams of the dish, a pack of Hans Ranke contains 100 grams. If you only eat one pack at a time, Hans Ranke also saves calories.

Hans Ranke from DHDL: That’s how it tastes

The three varieties from Hans Ranke from DHDL stand side by side.

Add water, stir, wait: This is how Hans Ranke prepares from DHDL.

The preparation is child’s play: add water, stir, wait three minutes, done. A first scent experience arises when I tip the hot water over Hans Ranke: Connoisseurs of packet soups feel right at home.

Porcini Chili

First is this Porcini Chili due. I don’t usually eat very hot food and I find the chili’s degree of heat to be correspondingly strong, but not unpleasant. Unfortunately, the taste reminds me a lot of the usual ready-made products, although I have to say that the porcini mushrooms are a welcome change and their mildness harmonizes wonderfully with the chillies. Nice. You can tell someone has thought about it here.

Hans Ranke from DHDL: Mango Curry

Then a bite of mango curries and what can I say: I am enchanted. At first bite, the curry is so unfamiliar that I wonder if I’ve ever tasted anything like it. The curry is a wonderful mix of fruity and hearty. My very personal highlight are the small pieces of mango, which always enchant my taste buds with their fruity note. In combination with the spices used, this is a great composition.

Mediterranean

Last is the flavor Mediterranean turn and is – how could it be otherwise – probably the most common. Tastes like a pizza smells. Far from being a horror for the palate, on the contrary, it tastes good. But of the three flavors, it’s more of a classic. Always comes along, is never a hit.

satiety

Because the mango curry turned me on the most, I decide to eat it to see how long Hans Ranke satisfies my craving for food. The time of the tasting is 1 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 2022. One thing should be said: 100 grams of lentil and chickpea couscous look smaller than they are. Hans Ranke stuffs me pretty full – also unusual for a ready meal. The nice thing about it: I feel full, but neither overfull nor does the lentil and chickpea couscous pull me into a midday slump like fries with currywurst do, for example. Until the evening roast in the Brö at the local district club, I don’t eat anything except for a few tangerines. Hans Ranke thus fully fulfills the promise of a wholesome meal for me.

Conclusion

Hans Ranke does not reinvent the ready meal, but makes it a whole lot better than the usual products in the supermarket: the ingredients convince health-conscious connoisseurs of ready meals. My taste highlight is clearly the mango curry. The other two flavors convince through habit. All in all, Hans Ranke is a successful ready-made meal, even if the price includes it 4.80 euros is quite steep. There was a time when you got a doner kebab for it. It was nice, even if he wasn’t as healthy as Hans Ranke.

Torsten Schuh is offering 20 percent of the company for an investment of 75,000 euros. You can find out on May 9, 2022 at 8:15 p.m. on the Vox start-up show “Die Höhle der Löwen” whether one of the lions bites Hans Ranke’s vegan ready meal.
