For six years he was at the head of the German domestic intelligence service, his mission: to locate and target enemies of the constitution. Hans-Georg Maaßen is now considered such by his former authority. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has saved its former president in its extremist file. This emerges from a notice from the authority, the Maaßen on Wednesday published on his website. At first we had T Online and that ARD magazine “Contrasts” reported.
The BfV informed the South German newspaper with, in order to protect personal rights, one does not comment on individuals. Meanwhile, Maaßen accused Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) on platform X an “abuse of the protection of the constitution to combat political opponents” and an “attack on the free-democratic basic order”.
Contacts in the “Reichsbürger” milieu and other allegations
The signs that Maaßen could become an object of observation by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution had increased in recent months. In August 2023 it had already become known that the BfV was said to have asked the state security department of the Federal Criminal Police Office for information about Maaßen. The background was contacts between Maaßen and the Frankfurt businessman Markus Krall – who in turn had a very close relationship with Heinrich XIII. Prince Reuss, the alleged ringleader of a “Reichsbürger” group of conspirators, is said to have cared for him. Krall stood next to Maaßen again last weekend – in a videowhich he recorded to celebrate the founding of his own party, the Union of Values.
It is initially these and other contacts in the “Reichsbürger” milieu that the domestic secret service lists as findings in its letter to Maaßen’s lawyer. On the 20 pages of the decision there is a lot more information that the BfV has collected about its former president – social media postings, articles, speeches, meetings, which the Federal Office views as evidence of Maaßen’s involvement in right-wing extremist and conspiracy ideological circles.
Maaßen wants to “bring Germany forward again”
After the reports about the exchange between the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the BKA in Maaßen last August, the ex-head of the authority himself asked the BfV for information. The reply letter is dated January 16, the reports from T Online and “Kontraste”, according to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, informed members of the Bundestag’s Intelligence Control Committee about the incident that same week. Maaßen has until mid-February to file an objection against the decision.

Maaßen announced that it should become a party “that opposes every form of neo-socialism and totalitarianism and firewalls and will bring the country forward again.” He may also have alluded to a possible collaboration with the AfD, which is already partly classified as right-wing extremist.
