Breakneck escape from the fire: police rescue man from balcony

Police officers in Hanover rescued a man who, in complete panic, tried to climb over the parapet of a balcony. Flames were already coming from his apartment high up in a high-rise building.

During a fire on the tenth floor of a high-rise building in Hanover, a resident made a dangerous escape via the balcony to safety. Because of the intensive spread of the fire, the 30-year-old suddenly tried to escape on Wednesday over the parapet into the neighboring arcade at a height of around 30 meters, the fire department announced in the evening. There were two police officers there who tried to calm the man down. They then courageously grabbed hold and pulled him over to them.

Both the resident and a police officer were reportedly injured. The rescued 30-year-old was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation. The 25-year-old police officer also inhaled smoke fumes and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Because of the fire in the 15-story high-rise building with visible fire development, a large number of emergency calls were received on Wednesday afternoon. The Hanover fire and rescue service were on site with 66 emergency services and 25 vehicles. There were no other injuries. The cause of the fire was still unclear. The material damage is estimated at around 100,000 euros.
