Good mood and public toilets do not have to be a contradiction in terms. In a Hamburg toilet, the toilet lady sings and not only grabs the cleaning rag, but also passionately picks up the guitar.

Public toilets are not necessarily a place you would want to linger. In Hamburg-Barmek, however, there is a quiet place that, thanks to a musical toilet lady, is not so quiet and also puts you in a good mood.

In Krüsistrasse, cleaner Stefanie Ansul-Weissner regularly picks up her guitar between her cleaning trips. “In one shift I definitely sing 30 to 50 songs,” said the 52-year-old of the German Press Agency.

Songs by Joan Baez or Janis Joplin

With her melodious voice, she prefers to sing songs by the American folk singer Joan Baez. Janis Joplin also likes to play them. Ansul-Weissner has been singing during her work for about 20 years. “The acoustics are good here. Full of reverb. Really great,” she said.

With her songs she puts a smile on the faces of many customers. And sometimes more than the usual 50 cents end up on the plate as a tip, she said. If she had one wish, she would like to turn this hobby into a career. “But I can’t really get out of the slippers.”

The Hamburg city cleaning department sees the hobby of the employee positively. “Of course we are pleased that we have such personalities in our company. That is also an expression of diversity,” said a company spokesman. “She’s doing a great job and if she still has time to make music to make the customers happy, that should be fine with us.” The fact that Stefanie Ansul-Weissner even has regular customers who make a detour to relieve themselves with her also underlines her popularity.
