Hamas-Israel War: Protesting against the deaths of “innocent civilians”, Belize suspends relations with Israel

It is a new Latin American country to express its distrust of Israel’s military operation in Gaza in retaliation for the Hamas attack on October 7. Belize announced on Tuesday that it would suspend its diplomatic relations with the Jewish state.

The government “withdrew” the accreditation of the Israeli ambassador to Belmopan and suspended “all activities” of her representative in Israel, with “immediate effect”. The small Central American state said it wanted to protest against the death of “innocent civilians” in Gaza, where Israeli bombings killed 11,320 people, mostly civilians including 4,650 children, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health.

For Israel, Belize aligns with “Iran”

Israel called the decision “a capitulation to Hamas terrorism and an alignment with the Iranian-led axis of evil,” according to a statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

It is the second Latin American country to announce that it is breaking diplomatic relations with Israel since the start of the conflict, after Bolivia on November 1. Colombia, Chile and Honduras, for their part, recalled their ambassadors for consultations.
