Dozens of people have died in a tank truck explosion in Haiti. Apparently, many of the victims had attempted to steal gasoline after an accident before the fuel caught fire. The deputy mayor of Cap-Haïtien, Patrick Almonor, spoke on the radio of 47 deaths who were burned beyond recognition. It is impossible to identify them. According to his information, around 20 surrounding houses also caught fire as a result of the explosion in the early morning (local time). Further victims are to be feared there.
The main hospital in Cap-Haïtien was completely overwhelmed with the treatment of the many injured. Many of them were in mortal danger. “We don’t have the means to treat the many people with severe burns,” a nurse from Justinien University Hospital told AFP. “I’m afraid we won’t be able to save everyone.”
“I was shocked and shocked to receive the sad news that a tanker truck loaded with gasoline exploded in Cap-Haïtien last night, causing around 40 deaths, dozens of injuries and significant property damage,” Prime Minister Ariel Henry wrote on Twitter.

Haiti is the poorest country on the American continent and suffers from violence, corruption and natural disasters. At the beginning of July, President Jovenel Moïse was shot in his residence, the background remains unclear to this day. Criminal gangs control large areas, especially around the capital Port-au-Prince.
The poor Caribbean country suffers from massive fuel shortages as criminal gangs have brought important supply lines under their control. It was only on Monday that there were several protests against the increase in gasoline prices.
